Iron Horse Middle School

Important Message from the Principal and IHMSEF President

May 2015

Dear Jaguar Parents/Guardians:

We are proud of our students’ accomplishments this year and are already looking forward to next year. Academic success doesn’t just happen, but is the result of our excellent administrators, dedicated teachers, and committed parents. A key component of this success is your financial commitment to the Iron Horse Middle School Education Fund (IHMSEF). The IHMSEF has two primary purposes:

  1. Reduce class sizes: We reduce academic class sizes by paying the district for additional “teacher sections”, with each section being the cost to hire a teacher for one period. This year, we are paying for 7 sections to keep our class size in Core 6, Math 6, 7, and 8, and Science 6 and 7 to 30 students. Without these additional sections, class size averages could reach 34-35 students. For 2015-2016, our goal is to fund 10 sections to also reduce Science 8 to 30 students and to add 2 sections for our overcrowded electives.
  2. Technology support and upgrade: Based on input from the Principal and Site Council, IHMSEF purchases devices which enable students to access digital tools that help them research, take notes, create, and author as 21st century learners. This provides our students access to a much richer variety of educational materials while developing proficiency and keeping abreast of the latest technology. In the 2014-2015 academic year, IHMSEF funded the purchase of 36 new iMac minies for the computer lab. This year, IHMSEF will continue to replace older devices. We need to plan to regularly replace older devices; for example, we now have 135 devices that are at least 7 years old!

To fulfill these critical missions, we ask every family to contribute $360 per student, per year. Contributions of ANY amount are gratefully received. Mindful of the demands on your time, we don’t hold auctions, carnivals, car washes, or wrapping paper sales. Our donation drive is the only planned fundraiser for the Education Fund is this one

We also want to take full advantage of donations offered by our business community. If you work for an employer that will match your donation, please submit your request now. This is one of your employee benefits and only costs you a few minutes of your time. For information on how to submit a match request, please visit the Ed Fund page on our school website.

Please donate by check sent to the PO Box 2957, San Ramon CA 94583 or the school office. You may also pay using PayPal in a single or multiple installments by going to the IHMSEF section of our school website ( Look for the online donation button.
